Emily C.: Joint Practice, 11/20/13
Today, Brooke and I had our first practice session together. We started out with my piece “Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal.” Some of my phrases were a little choppy, so Brooke had me do some wave-like motions with my arms to keep the line smooth. She also pointed out that sometimes my jaw got a little tight, so I made sure to keep my jaw relaxed while keeping my diction clear. There were a couple of moments when my tongue got a little “in the way,” so Brooke had me do some small squatting motions with the bigger phrasing to distract me from doing what I shouldn’t. This helped make the music much smoother and free-flowing. Next, we worked on a couple of Brooke’s songs. We decided to work on her diction, working on speaking the text while keeping her jaw loose and maintain internal space. On her english piece, we worked on making her vowels were speech-like and clear so they were easier to understand. We also worked on smoothing out her phrasing as well through the use of musical momentum.
