Ambers chapter summaries 7-10

Summaries chapters 7-10

Chapter 7
Insane coloratura feats, or any decent displays of such don't just happen overnight. These things take time, diligence and patience. Not one of us is like the other. Therefore, not everybody will reach the same level at the coloratura thing. However, that should not stop us from gaining a complete development as possible on our own terms. Don't force it either. Start small and slow and gently work your way up. The harder you try to force it and MAKE it happen, the less you will accomplish. Just think, let, and trust.
Key concepts: It's about having a complete development of the individual, not being the end all be all of coloratura. This is a process, not a competition or an instant fix.
Key words: Patience, release, think, let, trust.
Connection: This is one of my favorite things to do. BUT only because I built it up very gradually since I was about 15 years old after being exposed to some baroque music I thought was fun. That's 27 years of work! Even then, every piece takes a slow careful approach until it reaches speed. Have fun with it like you have fun with playing through  and discovering all the lower levels of a video game to reach that advance plateau.

Chapter 8
Big voice; little voice... bah! It's how it carries that counts. It's about intensity over just plain loudness. You have to learn to trust your sound and that it really is carrying further than you think. Otherwise you just over-blow yourself into a whole new world of hurt.
When dealing with an orchestra, remember that your “ringing” voice carries on a totally different and higher set of wavelengths per second then the typical modern orchestra. So, don't be fooled by what you are hearing inside your head.
Developing this proper ring takes time and training. If you try and somehow artificially try to produce this thing right off the bat, the only thing your career will have after that is a quick end.
There is no set time schedule and growth will come about naturally as you carefully and consistently train.
Key concepts: There are NO shortcuts to getting that ring, let the voice lead you to discover its new strength, Don't push this issue too soon....or at all.
Key words: PATIENCE, carrying quality, intensity, loudness, ring, singers format, Think and let, no shortcuts.
Connection: We must help students understand that there is a difference between being resonant and just plain loud.

Chapter 9
Voices go though changes as they mature. The stages of maturity that the voice passes through must be treated with thoughtful application of what is appropriate for every stage of development. Even someone in their 70's and 80's can still have a career and sound wonderful with proper and appropriate continued training and practice. NEVER try to do too much too soon.
Key concepts: training must be appropriate to age and development. Let the voice grow at its own rate and trust in the result.
Key words: Use it or lose it, muscle development.
Connection: as teachers it is our job to help students find the voice that nature intended for them. If we try and make a students voice into something it's not...shame on us!

Chapter 10
Articulation isn't just about spitting out really good crisp consonant sounds. Articulation as an amalgam of good diction of consonants as well as proper vowel modification in the different ranges as well as proper application of dipthongs and tripthongs. Articulation is about the whole package and establishing as free a condition as possible for all movements of the articulators. Eventually we must learn to isolate each little movement in a similar manner as that of a mime (only without getting beaten up in the park for doing it).
Key concepts: spit those consonants out, Timing of the consonants just in front the vowels, keeping the articulators loose, Isolate those little movements like a mime.
Key words: loose, articulators, vowel modification, spit.
Connection: Can we have a semester class just for this? Soooooo hard for me.
