Sarah Brenay - Masterclass - 11/12/13

Meikjn?
The entrances and timing in general are off the accompaniment. I wonder if she's just used to the recording she has? Either way, definitely needs to learn the accompaniment and where she fits in there. Nice smile and engaged face. Vowels are not very French like. There's a lot of sliding into pitches. Her body is not aligned. She's definitely backing off on low notes, but I'm not sure why since I'm confident she can do them. Despite these technical problems, I found her voice very pleasant and refreshing. When she focused more on her intent and message the performance was much more... just more. : )

Jaw looks very cushion-y and loose, but is adjusting height for vowels a lot. Breath is very short and gaspy. Crescendo was awesome! Very consistent in tone and rate of dynamic change! Nice. Ah! When you make a big deal out of mistakes like you just did, it tells me you are analyzing while singing. SING! This requires great vulnerability. Cindy's work helped you to produce a present tone up there. I know you'll get there. But you will have to let go of the illusion of control. Young Grasshopper.

The singing is very jelly fishy. I mean there are mini crescendos and decrescendos on each note creating an undulating jelly fish sound. The tone is very nice and mellow which works great for this song. I really want to see release in the jaw to let the sound free! Very impressive work from this dude. I have a lot of respect for these two students; singing in front of music majors can't be comfortable.

There are several moments where the line of the phrase is broken, often right before high notes. Gotta keep the steady flow of air. I can see the story in your face, you're very engaged and animated! I would like to see this expression extend to your body as well. Connect your body to the meaning. Right now there's some random movement (hands and hips). When Cindy suggested you "put the vocal cords together" you made such an awesome focused sound. Cool stuff!
