Elizabeth Tait Lesson Summary 11.11.13

I haven't done lesson summaries in a while, but I can make a new beginning at any time!  And I can celebrate little victories, like actually doing this lesson summary.  I will start out with some fabulous direct quotes from Cindy:
"Go the honky spot!"
"When each note is itself, it's better able to connect to the notes around it."
"This is not music you want to salvage." (referring to my concerto piece that is scary and high)
"Singing is not actually hard, it's just scarier than snot."
"You don't have to stop singing to think."
"You can't hang off the side of a building unless you have an anchor."
"It never hurts to get ready for a high note."
"The out-loud sound is never the first sound."
"When you're on the high note, the tone is up but the prep is down.  When you're on the low note, the tone is down but the prep is up."

Now, time for some Cindy mantras:
Think --> Let --> Assess
Think Better

She also mentioned a great way to practice better.  After you complete an exercise or passage, you have four options:
1. Repeat the exercise
2. Repeat the direction mentally, and then repeat the exercise
3. Refine or revise the direction, and then repeat the exercise
4. Decide you did awesome and move on to the next thang

Some more great things I learned:
- I need more stretchiness and yawniness in my sound
- I need to give myself over the feeling of Free Flowing Air much more often
- Don't let the sound fall down as it descends in pitch
- Always pretend like you were singing before you actually started singing
- You can use [k], [g], or [y] to open up the back space for a high note.

Very good lesson, I feel like I really understood some things, and know what to work on.
