Sarah Brenay - Lesson Summary - 11/15/13

In my lesson yesterday we did some really great exercises and worked on two of my pieces. The warm ups/ exercises were directed at keeping my higher range only lightly adducted and free. We did a lot of "candle blowing" while I tried to memorize the proper sensation for these notes. I found that if I keep my jaw as far open as i can (which would be too far open for normal singing) my larynx and tongue were unable to interfere with my high notes. Although I won't be singing with my jaw like that, it is a good exercise to reteach the tongue and larynx. We worked on moving from high to low and back up again without carrying the weight of the low range up again. I'm starting to get the hang of it!
Then we worked on Die Forelle. We [ba]ed it a lot to try and get my voice to treat all the notes the same and not push on long notes or high notes. That worked really well, especially when I switched between text and [ba] so that my brain started treating all the words like [ba] and not entangling them. Cindy also helped me with breathing in this one. I was having a lot of trouble getting through the phrases because the song moves very fast and there are only slight breaks between phrases. It helped me to speak through the lines and notice how easy it is to breath when I'm speaking in rhythm, and then apply that same easy breath to singing.
We also worked on Nana - I've got the rhythms down now WOOT. Cindy noticed that I tend to entangle the note I'm on with the one coming next, pushing through the current note or tensing on it or closing to the vowel too early. So we went back to the [ba]s for a little to retrain my brain to see all of these notes as independent things that each require attention and focus for their duration. That helped me a lot! Especially when it came to ascending lines.
Great lesson! Loads to work on!
