Chapter Summary: What can we do to improve our potential? Get out of our own way and allow all possible freedom to our voice. Our whole bodies are our instruments and thus tension or pain in one part of the body completely unconnected to the voice can cause tension for the voice. We need to be aware of our overall body health. Your voice can't be free in singing if it isn't free in speaking. First we need to release, let our bodies relax, our muscles as well as our minds since everything is connected. The paradox is that the harder you try the less well your voice responds. We have to relax, think, and let sound happen.
Key Concept: Your voice can't be free in singing if it isn't free in speaking. You must release in both mind and body to let sound happen.
Key Terms: Fixative
Hyperfunction
Release
Making Connections: I've become so much more aware recently of the unimportant muscles I associate with singing that have nothing to do with my voice. I have also become more aware of the way I use my speaking voice and how I speak off my primal sound a lot of the time. I'm working to fix that and I'm going to incorporate the 12 exercises for release that are included in this chapter.
