Sarah Boucher OB Chapter 4 Summary
Chapter Summary: Singing is learning to fly without thinking. We should strive to think and let our voices not force our voices. All you need to do is think pitch for it to happen, not muscular tension. Hissing, primal sounds, and laughing can help us to reconnect to a free sound in our voice. We should be able to feel completely free on downward sighs and upward sighs and on all vowels. We should mostly warm up from high to low, because low to high tends to create too much subglottal pressure. Airflow is keep because it keeps the larynx low and in a place where the sound can be more free.
Key Points:
-"There is a fuller resonance and stronger tone, when muscles are relaxed."
-Thought of pitch will bring about automatic placement of the vocal folds
-Thought of pitch and flow of air should bring about phonation
-Let the airflow do the work
-The larnyx should never be pulled down, correct airflow will place it where it needs to be
-Don't rely on sound to guide your thoughts on your voice, once the sound has been made it is too late!
Key Terms:
Making Connections: I really identified what Brown said about not letting the sound of our voice tell you what it going on internally. It just reiterated to me the importance of awareness and how we should not listen but know how it feels! I often just pay attention to the sound when I practice and am rarely satisfied. It will be very beneficial for me to start concentrating on feeling.
