Sarah Boucher Masterclass Critiques 11/5
Brad Summers: Brad always has a lot of energy when he sings, which is awesome. I saw some good breaths that were full and sustained, every once in a while he would push air out and run out of breath before the phrase ending. He had very clear diction but it almost made his phrasing too percussive. He tended to shuffle his weight back and forth and would unconsciously pull at his clothes. He didn't communicate specific things the first times, and all the verses felt the same. As Cindy, had him communicate more fully his timbre was a lot richer and he seemed more relaxed. As he focused on the story more all his unconscious movement went away. Getting him to be more presentational made his character come alive! She encouraged him to overact so that he can pair it down for performance.
Luke Shepherd: Luke's sound is very nice, I thought he had a nice chiaroscuro in this piece. He seemed confident in his stance and his breath seemed relaxed. Luke had a presence and energy but I did not quite grasp the concept that the piece is supposed to be two different characters. As we discussed the differences between the characters and how to subtly make that transition, the piece came alive and I was much more aware of the change between the two characters. I think making some more specific choices about the characters will help with the emotion as well. Asking, how the characters know each other or how the man feels about seeing a dead loved one?
Sam Meredith: Sam has a really rich sound, I am confused a bit though because I don't hear much vibrato? Occasionally I felt that Sam was pushing his sound instead of working with his breath the carry his sound but overall his sound felt released. Hearing about how Sam became more released in practice, was really helpful. I am need to try that out! When Cindy had Sam think more rhythmically the piece had more motion and phrase shaping.
