Emily F. masterclass 11/5

Emily F. masterclass 11/5
Brad Summers: I really love Brad's sound, particularly in the lower range. It's very rich. There is an overall stiffness in Brad, I'm guessing due to nerves, that inhibits the performance he gives. I wonder if he feels like he gets a nice deep breath? I tend to get really rigid when I'm nervous too, and I always feel like I can't get a good breath when I'm that way. Diction was pretty good, but I'd double-check the IPA. One word I noticed (I think) that was mispronounced was "verstehn". When Brad started really animating the lyrics, his sound was really improved! The idea of practicing with just body language, or just words to convey the meaning is an interesting one that I'd like to try for myself. I get locked in when I sing, and I want to better communicate when I sing.
Luke Shepherd: Really nice job today! You seemed a little frustrated, but I thought you did well. Diction was fantastic, body seemed pretty released and comfortable. Timbre was clear and warm, particularly on the second character parts. Timbre was a little airy on the first character parts--I don't know how you could get the body energized more for those soft parts (I've been thinking a lot about this lately for my own stuff!) but even though the voice is piano the body needs to stay forte. I enjoyed the characters, and I think that when you work with the piece a little more it will be really effective and nice.
Sam Meredith: Hey! I liked what I heard from you today! This song seems to be really good to help you with a more released body/sound. However you practiced this is working for you. One thing that seemed to make a big difference, and it only happened for a minute, was when Cindy asked for more space or something for a second, and I saw your jaw open up and relax, and the sound was way improved. I think it might have been when she talked about spontaneous combustion? Anyway, good work overall!
