Sam Meredith OB Ch. 7 Summary

Sam
Chapter 7 Summary- Developing agility as a singer is of great importance, just as it is essential for a world-class athlete. Learning how to sing coloratura properly will not only help us learn how to sing some of the most popular and most important repertoire, but it will also help us maintain a good feeling of  release when we sing songs of other styles. In order to sing coloratura properly we must be free of all tension in our throat. Remember, the vocal folds  adduct properly purely as a response to thought. All other muscles contractions, therefore, are unnecessary. We can condition our voice for singing coloratura passages by singing simple scales and gradually increasing the speed at which we sing them. The same principle can be applied to learning to sing trills. Learning these skills takes time, but is possible so long as we practice consistently.
Key Concept-Vocal agility is key for success as a singer. It can be developed through consistent practice the difficulty of which increases gradually relative to the abilities of each individual voice.
Key Terms-Agility, Coloratura, Trill
Making Connections-I'm content with the work I've done so far to improve the agility of my voice, but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. I just need to remember that my brain is what controls my ability to sing embellishments well, not extrinsic muscle contractions.
