Sarah Boucher OB Chapter 9 Summary

Sarah Boucher OB Chapter 9 Summary
Chapter Summary: Voices change over time. Our bodies are not fully developed until our twenties, therefore we should not expect younger students to sing with adult voices. It takes time to develop the voice and in order to maintain acquired skill we need to continue exercising our voices daily. Exercising our voice is like exercising our muscles, we must to it often for short periods of time. Healthy singing makes for a long career.
Key Points:
-It could take five to ten years to develop a "vocal athlete"
-Laryngeal muscles must have rest
-When you use your voice correctly you can sing for years
-Although there are similarities between the voices of an adult and the voices of a child, a child's voice is not fully developed and has less intensity and range than an adult.
Key Terms:
Making Connections: I really liked when Brown said " Each must learn that he can't do anything with his voice that he can't conceive in his mind" So much of singing is mental! I find that I don't visualize singing in my mind enough. I need to be able to appropriately visualize and get my mind in the right place before I even sing. I often sing mindlessly but I need to remember that the mind and body have to be one in singing!
