Sam Meredith OB Ch. 3 Summary

Sam
Chapter 3 Summary-In order to sing properly we need to manage our breath properly. Being able to sing well is not a matter of having large lung capacity, but is rather a matter of managing our breath well. Having good posture is crucial when trying to get a good breath. The diaphragm is the muscle that contracts when we breathe and is connected to the lumbar region of our back. Our back, therefore, must be aligned properly so that we can aid the diaphragm's contraction and get a good breath. There are many good exercises that we can do to improve our posture. Laying on the floor with our arms resting above our head and our knees bent can be a good way to relax the body and enlongate the spine. Once in that position we can slowly return our arms and legs to their normal position. Then, we can roll over and stand up slowly. Next, we should place our hands on our hips and bend our legs. Then, we can again enlongate our spine by stretching upward to have a taller feeling. It is important in this exercise to stay loose. We can then do exercises to make our abs firm. We can also lay down on the floor again and raise our legs. After that we should stand up and try shifting our weight from the back of our foot to the ball of our foot. Next, we can try to walk in this position. All of these help us find good, natural breathing technique.
Key Concept-Healthy breathing is the inseparable companion of healthy singing. Good breathing should feel natural, should be aided by good posture, and should be learned before everything else.
Key Terms- Proprioception
Making Connections- Poor posture also seems to be something that I struggle with. I feel sometimes that I am running out of air during long passages and that high notes don't have as much breath energy as they need. Doing some of these posture improvement exercises would definitely help.
