Sam Meredith OB Ch. 4 Summary

Sam
Chapter 4 Summary-When trying to sing properly it is important that we are comfortable with a feeling of not being in control. Most singers have a natural tendency to just force the sound out. In reality this is both unnecessary and harmful. When we take a good breath it brings our larynx into a low, relaxed position. We should maintain this healthy position by beginning phonation just as we reach the top of the breath. This will give us the sensation that we are beginning to sing before we have even finished taking the breath. When we are doing exercises that require accurate pitch-based phonation we should harness the good qualities of the exercises previously discussed, i.e. they should feel natural and tension free. It is also important that these exercises are done in a healthy vocal range. Many people are accustomed to doing ascending vocalizes, but this usually causes us to push out more air as we sing higher notes, which causes unnecessary strain. Doing descending vocalizes helps us stay closer to our primal sound. We should also take our primal sound into account when coloring our vowels. All vowels, although different, should maintain the same release and ease that the primal 'uh' has.
Key Concept-We need to keep as much of our primal sound in our actual singing as possible. We need to take measures to make sure that there is not tension in our voice in all registers and that our breath is full and generous always.
Key Terms-Stroke of the Glottis, Frequency, Elicit, Think, Let, Trust
Making Connections-I think I need to do more to apply his advice on vowel color. I think I have gotten better, but I still need to harness that primal, natural feeling in all my vowels.
