Chapter 10 Summary-Accurate articulation is of great importance in singing. Singing is the only form of music that allows the artist to communicate actual words, so we need to be sure that we are understood when we sing. The proper articulation of vowels has already been discussed much. With vowels it is simply a matter of maintaining the freedom and release found in the primal 'uh' for all of our vowels. Of course, it will be impossible to maintain consistent vowel position in all parts of our voice. Some vowel modification is necessary in our upper range, but it is important to note that this shouldn't be a forced modification. This should simply be a natural modification that occurs as a result of us maintaining proper release and proper space for healthy phonation. It is, therefore useful to think of the same vowel position while simply allowing that released feeling to be a part of vowel articulation in the upper register. Consonants are also important. It is important to remember that consonants often interrupt the airflow that keeps the timbre of vowels consistent. They can also bring down pitch slightly. We should, therefore practice the transition from consonant to vowel so that this change is swift and has no effect on our intonation without omitting the important consonant sound.
Key Concept- Be understood when you sing
Key Terms-Articulation, Vowels, Consonants
Making Connections-I think I need to practice the transition from consonant to vowel and from vowel to consonant more. I need to make my articulation of consonants more efficient, meaning I pronounce the consonants clearly without spending too much time on them.
