Luke Shepherd OB Chapter 8

Chapter Summary: The size of your voice is given to you at birth. The task of every singer is to learn how to develop the carrying quality of the voice. It is hard to hear and judge your own carrying quality. All you can really do is learn what it feels like to you but performing in different rooms, different costumes, and different parts of the stage relative to music or an orchestra can affect how you hear yourself, so their is no immediate accurate measure of self-feedback as far as the carrying quality of the voice goes. Our chief resonators according to OB are the pharynx and the the mouth. The more free we are of unnecessary tension the more resonance that just happens. Relaxed laryngeal position provides a longer resonating column in the pharynx and allows for more resonance. Proper conditioning bring out the ring and carrying power of the voice but we must be careful to never try to force power or resonance, they just happen.
Key Concept: It is by thinking correctly that you can let growth take place in a natural way. There are no shortcuts, resonance, power, etc. just happen.
Key Terms: Power
carrying quality
resonance
intensity
singer's formant
Making Connections: Patience is so difficult to have sometimes. I want my voice to be somewhere that it's just not yet and I feel like I expect more out of my voice than it's really ready for. I've only been studying voice for 3 years, and although I've made HUGE improvement during that time I still have the tendency to want to skip ahead to things that my voice just isn't ready for yet.
