LaeKin Burgess Chapter 7 OB Summary

Summary: "flexibility is the lifeline of the voice." In order to sing coloratura "your throat must be free of all tension." Therefore, coloratura is healthy and helpful for every singer. Some people only understand coloratura as applying to sopranos but it applies to every voice type. Coloratura "conditions reflexive action in the muscles." This happens because coloratura requires the voice to move quickly from note to note releasing some muscle fibers while engaging others. You cannot MAKE coloratura happen so in order to accomplish it you must FREE your voice and eliminate pressure in the breath.  "Technique is a means to an end, not an end in itself." In order to enhance our vocal agility we must think and let!

Key Concept: Coloratura is good for the training of every singer. It requires us to free our voices, eliminate unwanted pressure and hone in the muscles of the larynx without taxing them heavily.

Key Terms: agility, THINK AND LET

Connections:  Having tried coloratura before I know it is impossible to accomplish if you are not singing properly and it feels so great when it is done right! I didn't think I could do it at first but after some practicing I got it down. I can see the value of learning the freedom and agility of coloratura and applying it's principles to all of your singing.
