Mariah OB 3

Mariah OB 3
Chapter Summary: Posture and breathing are very connected. When we have good posture, it allows for fuller breaths. When we have slumped posture, there is simply less room for the lungs to expand. Proprioception is being aware of yourself. When you have this sixth sense, you are aware of your muscles and know when you have good posture. Low breaths should refer to expanding your lower abdomen but not pushing out your stomach. Singers usually have the same breath capacity as most people but their breath management has been refined. The vocal folds manage the release of air while singing but our lungs always have that full reserve after taking a breath.
Key Concept: Upright posture allows for full expanding of the lower abdomen while breathing.
Key Terms: proprioception, tidal volume, complemental volume, supplemental volume, residual volume, vital capacity, Venturi effect
Making Connections: I need to be more aware of my body posture and remember that it connects to breath. Sometimes I try to take deep breaths without paying attention to my posture, so I think being  more conscious about being upright will help me take fuller breaths. I also need to make sure I'm not trying to stick out my stomach in an attempt to take a low breath but instead expand all of my lower abdomen.
