LaeKIn Burgess TNV Chapter 13 Summary

Summary: For singers, their whole body is their instrument. A healthy body is a healthy singer. It is important to stay well hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. Staying properly hydrated and taking proper care of vocal chords will help singers to avoid vocal pathologies.  Singers should avoid smoking and extremes of diet and exercise. Nodules are caused by repeated misuse of the voice and cause a break in the vibration of the vocal chords.  To compensate for that "hole" in the sound singers sometimes press even harder to initiate the vibration of the chords. This only makes matters worse. A polyp is a rupture on the outer membrane of the vocal folds and causes a gravelly sound in a specific area of the voice.  It is important when we are sick not to sing out fully for extended periods of time and to focus extra hard on technique. The perfect balance of confidence and humility will bring success to the singer.

Key Concepts: Your instrument is YOU. Take care of yourself and be educated about what you can do to keep your voice healthy.

Connections: I don't think I keep myself well enough hydrated. I think I could work on this. I also probably tend to push my voice to hard when I'm sick because I get impatient and I just want it to sound good. I feel like I could work on being a little more self aware and giving my body more of what it needs.
