LaeKin Burgess TNV Chapter 1 Summary

Summary: Sound has three components: a generator, vibrator and a resonator. In this sense the voice functions similarly to any other instrument however unlike other instruments, the voice is not a machine. With other instruments the goal is to manipulate the object efficiently so it creates good sound but with the voice we cannot manipulate anything. What happens when we sing well often has little to do with what we DO in singing this is why a wholistic approach in singing is effective.  This means we focus more one singing freely and comfortably rather than handing out "prescriptions"for the problems assuming that once they are fixed the voice will be good as new.  The one way to find stability and strength in singing is to let go of the idea of stability. "Vulnerability, spontaneity, constant motion, and creativity are essential to good vocal technique."

Key Concept: In order to be true to our audience and true to ourselves we must be vulnerable.  Our voices exposed are our voices at their best.

Key terms: Generator, vibrator, resonator

Connections: I tend to be a bit of a control freak when it comes to my voice but this chapter is all about letting go. When we are controlling our voices we are not giving an honest performance.
