LaeKin Burgess OB Chapter 8 Summary

Summary: "Never overload the larynx with the greater power of the lungs. Let your voice lead you to discover its new strength." As singers we hear ourselves differently than the outside listener hears us. Therefore, we must be careful not to lose the beauty and natural ring of our voices by exaggerating or pushing our sound. As we free our voices and get our articulators out of the way we allow for the natural resonance of our voices to happen which is powerful enough to carry over an entire orchestra. Nasal resonance is an important part of the "ping" in our voices but strong resonance is NOT produced there. As we train we will find that our vocal chords will respond more readily to emotion and thought. They will be stronger and more connected to the breath as we train them properly. Do not try to rush this process there are "no shortcuts."

Key Concept: Resonance and power happen as a result of proper resonance and a free voice. This allows overtones to carry and that makes the sound more powerful.  Power should never be achieved at the expense of tone.

Key Terms: Resonance, Singers Formant, carrying quality

Connections: When I was younger I was told, like the people Oren mentioned in his book, that I had a big, beautiful voice.  I also really loved opera when I was younger so it was easy to hyper-adduct my vocal chords to try to create a bigger sound. I LOVED big sound and accomplished it by pushing some of the time. Luckily, I noticed when I pushed that it would hurt after a while and I started experimenting with other ways of making my voice carry. I still attempt to push a lot but I'm learning how to discover the carrying capacity of my voice without the push.
