If we are teaching little kids we have to make sure that we don't push their voices to ranges that are uncomfortable. They should be singing in a soft falsetto type tone until they go through puberty and then you will be able to start to hear what. Voice type they might be. Some people excel at hearing pitches, others do not, but with work and practice anyone can learn how to identify pitches.
Key concept: don't force children's voices to sing something that is not comfortable in their range.
If I ever teach little kids I know I'll have to be very sensitive to their voices and not push them into singing notes that are out of their comfort zone.
