Summary: "A good teacher who thoroughly understands healthy voice use is probably the safest guide in your search for a particular voice classification." If we get too wrapped up in what others "label" our voices to be we end up putting a cap on our abilities. It is especially important that we don't expect young singers to sound like mature adults. The same concepts of register that apply to adults apply to children too though you cannot expect mature sounds. Children should sing lightly and should avoid singing for long periods of time. There is no such thing as a monotone. Everyone can learn to relate to pitches. This can be accomplished by having them mimic sounds around them (like sirens) and having them try to match pitch on the piano.
Key Concepts: Experiment and allow yourself to discover your voice. As a teacher, don't expect mature sounds from young students.
Key Terms: Classification
Connections: Again, I feel like this is important because I've experienced what it is like being "classified" incorrectly and really struggling to feel like my voice was even worth developing. It wasn't until I got a different instructor that I restored confidence in my voice as being my own with a unique identity that I needed to discover.
