Summary: There are various "qualities" of the voice that occur throughout the vocal range. These different qualities can be divided into four registers. The first register is the lowest and used only in speaking. It relates to vocal fry. The second register is our normal speaking voice and is therefore the easiest to access. The third register is a high register used mostly in singing. The fourth register is very high "flute"like register that is found in some women and children. Through exercise of the voice every day we can learn to access these registers and flow readily and easily between them. The more we sing and experiment with our voices the more we will realize what they are capable of. We shouldn't accept labels for our voices. We should be patient and develop our voices stage by stage. If we rush our learning to sing we will be disappointed. Singing is an athletic endeavor.
Key Concepts: The voice can be categorized in 4 separate registers. Our goal is that by exercising our voice daily we can discover these different registers and how to use them efficiently together.
Key Terms: Register adjustment
Connections: When I first started singing my teacher gave me a lot of really difficult repertoire. I had really high expectations for my voice. Instead of moving in stages I wanted the end result right then. Since then I have learned to experiment and LET my voice be itself. I don't have to try to make it live up to my expectations or the expectations of anyone else.
