LaeKin Burgess OB Chapter 10 Summary

Summary: Singing is unique to other forms of music because it allows us to use words as a means of expression. It is therefore, very important that our words are understood, but also that our words don't get in the way of creating beautiful tone. When we sing vowels we should keep a primal feeling in our bodies and in our larynx. Consonants stop the airflow and sometimes bring down pitch. We must do exercises to help us properly define and sustain the vowel and keep consonants crisp and understandable with as little interruption of airflow as possible. Some vowel modification will be necessary in the upper ranges but this should not be pushed and should remain natural.

Key Concept: We should train ourselves to be understood. Words should increase expression, not get in the way of good tone.

Key Terms: Articulation

Connections:  I use my jaw to create words a lot. Lately in lessons we have been working on keeping the primal feeling in my jaw all of the time so that vowels won't be squeezed and consonants won't be over-exaggerated. It is important as singers to keep tension out of lips, jaw and tongue so they don't get in the way of proper articulation.
