Summary: Many young voices have been ruined by over singing. Teachers who assign difficult repertoire too early should not be teaching voice! The voice is very intricate with a lot of small muscles involved. These should be trained and developed over time. We should not exercise our vocal muscles for too long at one time or we will over-use them, wear them out and possibly damage them. Methods of amplification and mechanical assistance has caused a decrease in the need for proper vocal technique. A good teacher will be to his student like a horse trainer to a horse by only allowing their student to do tasks once he has been conditioned to do so. It is unhealthy to make your voice into something it isn't. Training your voice takes time and patience. "Keep your thoughts clear about what you can expect from your voice."
Key Concept: Do not expect too much from your voice too soon. Like any other muscle, the muscles of the larynx develop with the proper amount of exercise over time.

Connections: As teachers we should be really careful not to assign too difficult of material too soon. As singers we must also be realistic about what we expect ourselves to sing. It is also important that we be honest with ourselves. If we are working on something and we realize we bit off more than we can chew, than we should have the courage to spit it out and try something a little easier first as we prepare ourselves to take on the bigger piece a little later.
