Jared Daley Buddy practice 11/5

Jared Daley Buddy practice 11/5

So this was probably our most useful buddy practice yet. Usually I'm the unmotivated one and don't know what to do during buddy practice. This time since we just finished the Naked Voice, we decided to try and apply some things from the book. We first read through the first invention again. Then we tried it out. Moving very slowly through the steps. It was kind of funny because we kept wanting to rush through all the steps, but forced ourselves to do it slowly and as accurately as possible. We both noticed that our [u]'s were weird and shifted the most in our throats. So we spent a lot of time on the refining vowels section for [u]. We practiced only using our lips to form the vowels and I also remembered what Thomas Glenn told me about lips and we were able to figure it out and we gained a lot more space on our [u]. Something else we discovered was that we both speak way too low! I was speaking in the low end of where the average baritone speaks. We challenged each other to speak higher from now on and we are going to remind one another. We also tried to apply the first invention to one phrase of our actual music. That was a lot harder than expected, it took a bit of time but we both finally noticed improvement. I had trouble with the word joy. I was singing on the "oy" which is obviously not a pure vowel. i had to work on singing [o] and adding the y at the very end. overall we had a great practice session.
