11/6/13 Lesson
Today was my last lesson with Brianna. We started out with easy lip trills going down the scale, and then we eventually switched to a “chewy” hum that’s not necessarily in the “singing” voice. Then, we talked about how to help maintain a relaxed “singing on the inhale” position by relaxing the small of the back, keeping a suspended ribcage as if we had butterflies in our stomach. I have trouble not collapsing this area, so Brianna told me to imagine that I had a third leg that supports my core so my diaphragm can flatten fully and allow more air through. We worked on singing [i, e, a, o, u] on a downward octave scale that goes back up on an arpeggio to maintain vowel consistency as we move through different registers. I need to find release in the back molars of my jaw and do a lot of “huhhhhh” moments to keep myself relaxed when I tense up. I also should maintain plenty of open throat space. We went through all of my pieces and the main things I need to work on is just keeping a relaxed jaw and allowing the breath to flow evenly to help facilitate a more musical phrase that doesn’t die out at the end.
