Elizabeth Tait OB Ch.2 Summary

Summary: In this chapter, Brown discusses methods by which a singer can get out of their own way.  In order to create good sounds, any remaining tension in the body has to be released.  And tension from anywhere in the body can effect the voice; the entire body is our instrument.  In order to find freedom in the singing voice, freedom in the speaking voice must be acquired first.  Brown has a list of methods by which singers can practice full body release on a daily basis.
Key Terms:
release
hyperfunction
allow
fixative
Key Concepts:  The full body is the instrument, so therefore we must find release in our entire body.
Making Connections: I think the exercises he listed are just what I need right now to take me to the next level. I notice that I have been focusing a lot on vowel refinement and and nasopharyngial space, but neglecting my entire body.  Time to swing the pendulum that way for a bit.
