Mariah OB 1
Chapter Summary: Primal sounds are sounds we make automatically without thinking about them, like when we laugh, cry or make other nonverbal sounds. These sounds are connected with emotion and tie back into the wholistic approach to singing. Each person has a unique voice and does not need to imitate someone else's voice to sing well. When we practice with our primal sounds and try to apply that to singing, it can help free our voice. Finding your primal sound will also help you connect to the emotion in the song because primal sounds are emotionally based.
Key Concepts: Singers need to find their primal sound to help free their voice and connect more emotionally.
Key Terms: primal sound, reflexive sound, voluntary production of sound
Making Connections: I have tried laughing or crying and then go right into singing and it really helped to free my voice. There was a lot less tension and I liked my sound a lot more. It felt more authentic and I didn't have to worry so much about the pitches; they just came. So I'm excited about that and want to keep working with this idea of primal sounds.
