Talking comes naturally to most people. It is our first
creative activity that we engage in. The mechanics of speaking is a lot more
complicated that most people realize. There are also a lot of variation of
inflection and expression in different types of conversations. The written word could never fully express
what the voice can. He also mentioned different languages and dialects.
Key Concepts:
We must sing more similarly to our speaking than we tend to
think we should.
Having fluidity in speaking helps singing to have more
fluidity as well.
We should not pay attention to how we sound when we speak
and when we sing.
Think about what you would like ti have happened not about
what you should or shouldn’t do.
Key Words:
Mode of expression
Source of utterance
Connections:
I have always been very self-conscious of the way I talk and
express myself. I used stutter a lot, which has made me always nervous about
speaking to others, as well as, self critical and aware of what I sounded like.
I have also been taught to think about what I say before I say it which has
added to my tentative attitude toward speaking.
I also have a friend, Whitney Parkin, who suffers Gastroporiesous ( Don't actually know how one would spell this crazy word for such a crazy stomach condition), a stomach condition, as
well as Muscle Tension Diysphonia, her vocal chords have been worn so thin by
the acid created by her stomach condition that they no longer touch and
therefore she can no longer phonate. She has been going to therapy and doing
excerises that will help her get better at bringing them the larger distance in
order to speak. I’ve never heard of this happening to anyone before. I’ve heard
of people having acid reflux but never so bad as this. She really can no longer
speak more than a whisper. I’ve been thinking a lot about her as I’ve been
reading this book and learning the anatomy of the throat.
I should figure out what I do in speaking that is good for
my singing voice as well as the things that I should not do while speaking
because of its unhelpfulness when I sing. Then once they have been addressed I
will not pay attention to them more than necessary.
