Sarah Brenay - OB - Ch. 4

Summary: To elicit pitch voluntarily but without control, we need to learn how and what to think. Firstly we need to relax muscles. Then we learn the effortless release used in primal sound and apply that to singing using sighs, lip trills, and buzzes from high to low. When sliding from low to high there should be a bouncy feeling as we change direction that indicates we have released excess weight on the low note, and can then ascend easily. As we add vowels we connect them to the primal uh. The virtue of exercises V-XII is that they cannot be done successfully with any extra force. Subglottal pressure, pushing from below will inhibit the natural sound. Let the airflow do the work. Inhalation will let to larynx lower, but we should never push it down. "Think what you want, let it happen, and trust the result."
Key Concepts: Connect the singing to the primal uh. Don't over do things, let the body do what it natural wants to. Trust the airflow.
Making Connections: I hate going on to these chapters when I haven't had time to work on the previous exercises. But I understand that we only have so much time until the end of the semester. I love that he mentions in the end of the chapter that as we develop technique, it won't take as long to warm up. I remember that in High School I had to warm up for a good half hour before I really felt ready! I feel like I have made progress after all! Now I really only need a few minutes if I'm focusing right. #Pat on the back.
