Sarah Brenay - OB - Ch. 3

Chapter Summary: Since posture effects both breathing and singing, it is essential to ensure that the body is properly aligned. Posture is maintained by muscles deep in the pelvic region of the body. External muscles do not need to be contracted to maintain good posture. Brown includes exercises in this chapter that help elongate and relax the back and give a singer the sensation of proper alignment. Then he discusses the process of natural breathing and includes exercises to find that as well. Singers do not need more lung capacity, they need to use their air more efficiently. Breathing should feel natural, not forced or pushed. Trust that the body will have the energy to carry you to the end of the phrase and you will find it there.
Key Concepts: Our bodies are naturally prepared for the task at hand, we only need to get out of the way. Posture muscles are deep. The lower back and abdomen expand during inhalation. Trust the body.
Making Connections: I really like this natural approach to singing. It makes sense to me that my body should be prepared to do what I ask it to. The problems are caused by me taking control and ruining things, not by my body's lack of ability. I liked the way Cindy explained natural breathing in class weeks ago, you never force breath when you talk! You never think, "oh no I want to say a long sentence, I better take a huge breath," that just doesn't happen. Our body knows how much air we need and we take it, and we use it, and then we breath again. All this without any strain or stress or panic. It should be the same with singing!!
