Sarah Boucher VRH Critiques 11/7
Cassie Dibbins: Cassie's timbre was really lovely for this piece, a very nice musical theater sound! I liked that her voice had some real presence, especially in the louder sections. Particularly in the beginning the character was fairly solid. I did notice at the beginning that the sound was under energized. Make sure the sound is still supported even though it is quiet. Breath was not utilized to its full potential. As the piece got louder and higher, I could tell that she was thinking more about her sound than the passion of the character.
Emily Hess: Emily's tone was very light and free, especially on ah. I didn't notice much about breath but I did notice that she twists the upper half of her body around as she sings. I think if she was more grounded and steady she could utilize her breath more. Once she began to sing she had a very alert expression in her eyes but during the piano introduction she had a very vacant expression. I think it would be awesome if she would bring the energy of her speaking introduction into the piano intro.
Brad Summers: It was fun to hear Brad singing something a little different from what I have heard before. I liked that his tone was softer and more gentle but still present. Although it is a softer piece, I think he could have used his breath a little more. His inhalation was good it was just that he locked down his body a little bit and didn't utilize the breath. I thought his character was good but could use more depth under it.
Shalayna Guisao: I always appreciate how calm Shalayna is as she sings, her eyes are always alive and her body solid and still! It is great, and I need to be more like that! Her inhalation was very good but I think there were moments when I think she could have prepared her breath sooner. I really like the chiaroscuro balance in her tone. Occasionally her tone was a bit breathy, but I am not really sure why!
