Sarah Boucher SS Chapter 13 Summary

Chapter Summary: Taking care of the whole body is essential for a healthy voice. Singers have the responsibility for caring for all aspects of their health so that their voice stays healthy. Hydration, not smoking, diet, exercise and taking care of our physical appearance are all important aspects of this. Another item Smith discusses is taking care of our voice so that we don't get nodules of polyps. We also need to be able to understand our voices especially when we are sick, knowing when to cancel and when to rely on our technique and make it through the performance. As singers we also have to be conscious of our mental health and not taking on more than we can handle.
Key Points:
-Singers need to find the balance of humility and confidence.
-When a singer has nodules their voice will drop out in a specific area. When they have polyps the voice will just sound gravely.
-Physical appearance is becoming more and more important in the opera world, therefore it is important that as singers we present ourselves well.
-We aren't hydrating our vocal chords, we are hydrating our bodies so that we can create mucus  that keeps the chords lubricated.
-If we have good technique most of the time we can sing through sickness.
Key Terms:
-Prenodular swelling
-nodules
-polyps
Making Connections: I really liked what Smith had to say about sickness and how if singers have good technique most of the time they can sing even when they are sick. I often think about how famous singers are able to perform all the time and not get sick. This made me realize that they probably do get sick as often as we all do but they are able to rely on their technique to pull them through. It makes me even more motivated to lock in good vocal technique so that I have that solid foundation to rely on!
