Sarah Boucher OB Chapter 6 Summary
Chapter Summary: Singers should not be held back by vocal classification. We should only allow ourselves to be categorized by teachers who have a strong knowledge of healthy singing. Young voices should not be pushed or pressured into sounding like more mature voices. It is important to let young singers sing lightly for short periods of time. There is no such thing as monotone. As Brown describes it, it is just that we all have a different sensitivity to pitch, like we do with color.
Key Points:
-Knowing your tessitura is important
-We should not allow classification to limit us
-Children should sing lightly and for short periods of time. If they do not sing healthy early on they will not have their voices long!
-Matching sounds to the piano is a way to help people that are not as sensitive to pitch.
Key Terms:
Making Connections: I really love Brown's stance on young singers. I loved to sing as a kid but I was told that I had to wait to take lessons. I am glad that I was slowly exposed to singing and not forced to sound more mature than I was able to. This will be extremely helpful as I teach because I am sure that I will mostly be teaching teens and I want to make sure I do not push them too hard!
