Sarah Boucher OB Chapter 10 Summary

Sarah Boucher OB Chapter 10 Summary
Chapter Summary: Articulation is essential in singing! Words are crucial to conveying meaning. Vowels should be created in a free manner with no entanglements. There are ten pure vowels and six diphthongs. Diphthongs should be like the tail on a pig, they have to be there but they should be short. Consonants are important but they should not interrupt airflow. We should strive to maintain a balance of resonance through all the vowels.
Key Points:
-"The same vocal techniques for articulation apply to all languages: relaxation of extrinsic laryngeal muscles, free coordination of the articulators, and free connection with the breath." (pg. 113)
-Vowels require space in the back of the mouth
-A larger resonating cavity is needed for higher frequencies
-As frequency and intensity shift vowels change their modal format.
Key Terms:
-phonemes
-vowel formant
Making Connections: I struggle with vowels, especially diphthongs! I really liked Brown's example of thinking of the tail on the pig for the second sound in the diphthong. It really helps me to visualize that. I need to continue purifying my vowels by continuous speaking of my texts.
