Chapter 2 Summary-Becoming a better singer is less of a matter of developing new abilities, but rather a matter of stripping away habits and tendencies that keep the voice from doing what it already is capable of. One thing that stands in the way of us finding this release is unnecessary body tension, which can make breath more difficult and put undue pressure on the larynx. Here are some exercises that we can do to help relieve some of the tension in our bodies. Allowing our head to roll freely on our neck forward, then left, then right, then back; yawning; moving our jaw around with our hand to make sure it is loose; massaging our jaw; massaging our neck; mimicking loosely chewing food while speaking; taking deep, easy breaths; releasing the tension in our tongue; holding our tongue between our thumb and forefinger and articulating an [a] vowel to check for tension; stretching our bodies and letting them swing left and right; laying down and rolling lazily; closing our eyes and simply picturing the tension falling out of our muscles and dripping onto the floor. All of these can help us find more release when we sing and should be done every morning before any intense phonation is performed.
Key Concept- Excessive body tension can be a roadblock in finding healthy, primal sound when singing. In order to relive this we can do several helpful exercises as discussed above.
Key Terms- Release, Hyperfunction
Making Connections- I think unnecessary tension in my body is one of my biggest problems as a singer right now. I should probably start doing these exercises so I can relieve that tension.
