Sam Meredith Master Class 11/5

Brad Summers- I thought the breathing was pretty good during this performance. He didn't seem to be gasping for breath at any point. The timbre was nice and warm for the most part, but there were some times when it was a little pinched. There was also some intonation trouble on upward jumps. I think it would be helpful to do the 'spontaneous combustion' exercise to improve the shorter articulations. He's right to turn some of those notes into stocatto, but they shouldn't be so punchy and short. The diction was decent. the ch's had a little too much sh in them for my taste, though. I thought during the first performance that this piece needs a little more physical involvement and I think that Brad did a good job at heeding Cindy's instructions in this regard.
Luke Shepherd- There was a little bit of shoulder action in some of Luke's breaths, but I'm being very picky by saying that. I think the song had a very pleasant natural timbre. The intonation was spot on. The diction was very clear and understandable. I actually really liked the expressive quality of the song the first time he sang it, but I still think that it was a good improvement when he changed it a little to make the contrast between the two different speakers more obvious.
