Sam Meredith Ch. 6 Summary

Sam
Chapter 6 Summary- Classification of different voices can be very difficult because there are so many factors that must be taken into account that are not in any way related to what notes a person can sing. Therefore, there are no concrete rules for labeling someone's voice. It is fairly common for someone to sing songs meant for a certain voice because that is what their teacher assigned to them even though they are in reality much more comfortable singing songs for a different voice type. That's why a competent voice teacher is our most powerful resource in classifying our voice. We should exercise caution in classifying singing voices from an early age, especially when we work with children. Children have very fragile voices, so it is important that if they sing they do so in a way that is easy for them. Otherwise, they may develop vocal pathologies during a critical developmental stage of their life. It is also important to note that there is no such thing as a monotone and that anyone can learn to sing and develop a solid vocal range.
Key Concept-Classification of your voice should be done only after careful exploration of your vocal abilities under the supervision of a reliable voice teacher.
Key Terms- Tessitura, Fach System, Monotone
Making Connections- I feel like I am sometimes guilty of being too eager to classify my own voice when really I probably haven't been studying my voice long enough the point where I can make a good guess as to what type of a singer I really am.
