Mariah OB 5

Mariah OB 5
Chapter Summary: It is very possible to stretch your range and learn how to adjust between registers easily. It just takes years to conquer these tasks and we need to be patient through that process. There are four registers of the voice. The first is the lowest one only used in speaking, the second is low and used for speaking and singing (chest voice), the third is high (falsetto, light), and the fourth is very high (whistle tone). Register adjustment allows singers to gently blend registers while switching between them to allow for a smooth adjustment. Singers need to sing every day and rest the voice when it is tired. While stretching the range, it should never hurt or else something is probably being damaged.
Key Concept: Ranges can be stretched in comfortable ways and smooth transitions between registers can be developed.
Key Terms: register, register adjustment, portamento, dumb jaw, "one register" system
Making Connections: I need to make sure I am more careful when trying to stretch my range. Sometimes it will feel somewhat uncomfortable but I want to go high so badly that I push it a little. I need to work with my voice more and be very gentle with it. I also need to work with the idea of adding more of the next voice when switching between registers.
