Mariah OB 8

Mariah OB 8
Chapter Summary: A singer does not necessarily need a big voice to have a good carrying quality. Falsetto mixed with some register 2 can carry very well, be more easily sung and have a more pleasant sound. Many women when singing high don't believe it is carrying very well because we are not able to hear what our sound is truly like. Good resonance is occurring when the singer can feel the sound in relatively the same spot for each vowel. Singers need to train their muscles and breath for years for good resonance to develop. Singers need to be careful to sing how they've practiced and not try to force a bigger sound when singing in a less acoustic place. Power is different for each voice.
Key Concept: Power can be developed individually and will differ for each singer. Carrying quality is important but a singer should not use tension to try to create a larger sound.
Key Terms: carrying quality, intensity, resonance, singer's formant, nasal resonance vs. nasality,
Making Connections: I need to work on slowly building the power of my voice and be careful not to sing louder than I practice. Often when I get into a less resonant space, I try to sing louder and a lot of things go wrong.
