Laura B DYV Chapter 8

Laura B
Chapter Summary: When it comes to singing with power, there's a big difference between singing with loudness and singing with intensity. You do not need a big, loud voice to fill a hall. What matters most is the carrying quality of the voice. Because of the carrying quality, we need to be careful not to listen to ourselves. What we hear will vary depending on where we sing. Our resonators are what vary the energies of the sounds we make. We must allow ourselves to be free of tension so that resonance can happen. As we free our voices of tension, our voice will lead us into our full resonant potential. Nasal resonance is different then nasality in that it is associated with the ring in the voice through making full use of the resonators, with the throat free and tensionless, and having a good glottal adjustment. Just like anything, finding good resonance is going to take time and patience. We must not push our voices too hard too soon.
Key Concept: "You must learn to let your voice lead you to discover its new strength and not reach out to try to 'make' it before the proper conditions have been established."
Key Terms: power, intensity & loudness, carrying quality, resonance, formant, "floating the tone," nasal resonance & nasality
Making Connections: I have always been told that I have a big voice, but for most of my life, this came with pushing it and tension. This chapter really made me even more aware of the damage that I have been doing and the bad habits I have created, thinking that I can do something too soon. From now on, I really want to treat my voice nicely and make sure that I am not pushing it into tension. I know that this will be difficult, because I don't know any different. I'm hoping that as I apply the techniques in this book, I will be able to begin to achieve this goal.
