Emily F. OB 2: Our bodies carry a lot of stiffness and tension, and these interfere with good release and freedom in the voice. The whole body is the instrument in singing, so when something is wrong in the body, the instrument is not at its best. It takes effort to find tensions and take care of them, but the effort is worth it. Massaging, stretching, and loosening exercises can help.
Key concept: Release of body tensions improve the voice as an instrument.
Key terms: hyperfunction, sympathetic nervous system
Making connections: I know this is all true! When my back problems bother me, I have a hard time singing. When I take the time to release the tensions in my body, my singing improves. The hard part is remembering the importance of doing those stretches and exercises, and really taking the time to do them. I am doing better at this, but often I try to cheat the amount of time and rush through the work of releasing. I really like all of the exercises suggested in this chapter.
