Sarah Boucher McKinney Ch.1
What are the 3 questions that McKinney asked teachers after
playing each of the samples of faulty singing? (5)
-What is wrong with the sound you are hearing?
-What do you think is causing it?
-What would you do about it if you were the teacher?
When does the diagnostic process begin? (11)
The diagnostic process can begin before any official testing happens.
Define symptom. (11)
A symptom is a change in your body, that causes you problems.
What are the 3 basic techniques for gathering evidence? (12
or 15)
1. Informal observations of the person
2. The patient gives you a self evaluation
3. Testing
Define diagnosis. (12)
Diagnosis is analyzing the evidence and putting it into a plan of action. It is not just knowing what the "disease" is but gaining enough knowledge about it to make a game plan.
What are the 3 fundamental questions a doctor must ask about
each patient he examines? (12)
1. What are the symptoms?
2. What are the cause of these symptoms?
3. What are the possible remedies?
SYMPTOMS, CAUSES, CURES.
Upon what should the teacher’s tonal ideal be based? (13)
A teacher's tonal ideal should be based around recognized artist that they have listened to, that exhibit vocal freedom and tonal beauty.
What are the components necessary to be able to communicate
information to the student in a way that s/he will accept your analysis and
want to make the desired changes? (12-13)
You have to use positive language and terms that the student is able to understand.
Complete this quote (14)
“Each student is an individual and must be allowed to seek vocal truth for himself under your guidance.”
Why is a systemic approach to diagnosing vocal faults
important? (14)
If you don't have an organized method some faults may go unnoticed and not get correct.
Complete these quotes (16)
“bad sounds and incorrect pitches which are not heard on the
first hearing become increasingly less likely to be heard with each subsequent hearing.”
“the longer you teach a student without correcting a
particular vocal fault the more inclined you are to accept it a san inborn characteristic of that person and leave it uncorrected.”
What are McKinney’s recommendations for the first hearing of
a student? (16)
On the first hearing of the student, McKinney suggest letting them sing through their whole piece and give them praise on what they did well. It is all about creating a positive environment and a place where they feel safe.
What is the teacher’s plan of action? (17)
A teacher's plan of action is to recognize symptoms, determine causes, and devise cures.
What are the two types of clues? (17)
Audible ones and Visual ones
What does the teacher need in order to determine causes?
(18)
The teacher needs to have a sound knowledge of the vocal mechanism and with the physics of sound.
What does it mean to use empathy as a voice teacher? Why is this a valuable tool? (18)
To have empathy as a voice teacher, you need to try to feel what the student is feeling when they sing. It is helpful to try to reproduce what they are doing so you know how to help them fix it. It is valuable because you can quickly identify what is happening and know best how to help your student.
How do we develop the ability to devise cures for vocal
faults? (19)
Being able to devise vocal cures comes from experience and applied knowledge. It is ok if we don't know all the answers right away!
Complete this quote (19)
“Do not begin to tolerate or accept the incorrect sound just
because you have not been able to change it. Be Resourceful; be creative; adapt your techniques; consult other teachers; keep searching; until you find the answer .”
