Elizabeth Tait McCoy Ch. 3

a) What are the two fundamental types of resonance that occur in the human body - forced resonance (or conducive resonance) and free resonance (sympathetic resonance.
b) Why are the chest and head not good resonators for the projection of sound? Because the chest and head only vibrate through forced resonance, which does not travel well to the listener.
c) What are the four traits common to all musical instruments, including the voice? a power source, a vibrator, a resonator, and an articulator.
d ) Why is the vocal tract considered to be a quarter-wave resonator?  Because it is an open/closed system, the wave that escapes the open end at the zero or null energy point of the wave (1/4 of the wave) is the one that is heard most readily.
e) What is the relationship between the harmonic series and the resonance series of a quarter-wave system? The harmonic series is in whole number intervals, while the quarter wave system is at odd numbered intervals.
f) define musical resonance  the amplification of frequencies through the echoing of various pitches..
g) What anatomical structures function as free resonators in the human voice? The vocal tract
