Sarah Brenay - MacCoy - Ch. 4

How is the vocal tract like the amplifier and tone controls of a stereo system?
The glottis is the source of the musical sound, and the vocal tract is the amplifier and equalizer.
Define the term formant: a formant is a resonance of the vocal tract.
Which formants are responsible for vowel creation? F1 and F2. The first and second.
What is formant tuning? When the fundamental frequency being sung lines up with the first formant.
Are there alternatives to using the singer's formant? Those who sing higher frequencies most the time, like sopranos, do not need the singer's formant in order to project. Some tenors also choose to line their fundamental frequency up with the second formant instead.
How are formants viewed differently in linear and nonlinear descriptions of vocal resonance?
I honestly do not understand this one.
What is the average pitch for F1 in the cardinal vowels?
i - E4
e - C5
a - G5
o - C5
u - E4
But they can all be altered slightly by adjusting the vocal tract.
If the vowel a is sing on F4, which of the first three harmonics is likely to be strongest?
Again, I really have no idea what's going on right now.
