The key points I learned from yesterday's lesson were:
- When switching registers, you must turn the corner in an hourglass fashion. This means taking your foot off the gas pedal for a second while you transition, and invite the voice to come along.
- Don't open your mouth to prepare for a higher note. High note preparation comes inside the mind, and then immediately released from a mouth that gets out of the way.
- In the high range, formants have to be adjusted quite quickly. So, I need to be accustomed to switching from [a] to [o] as I get higher. It will sound to the listener that is just a well adjusted [a] vowel, but to me it will feel like a narrowing as the voice goes higher in pitch.
- Pitch going up happens in the mind, not in the shoulders.
- Use the body to dig into high notes. If you don't, they will sound chipmunky
- If you want to rock forward, you need to rock back first. Musicality is a constant give and taking. Digging and releasing.
