a) How is the vocal tract like the amplifier and tone controls of a stereo system. The vocal tract and the amplifier/tone controls act as the filter in the source/filter theory.
b) Define the term formant. Resonance of the vocal tract
c) Which formants are responsible for vowel creation? F1 and F2
d) What is formant tuning? Changing the vocal tract to change the resonance to match the pitches you are singing.
e) Why is the singer's formant important. It allows the singer to access a frequency that is not already dominated by the orchestra, allowing the singer to be heard easily.
f) Are there alternatives to using the singer's formant? Yes, soprano's don't need it, because the harmonics are high enough. Tenors can train to use the F2 to resonate above the orchestra
g) How are formants viewed differently in linear and non-linear descriptions of vocal resonance. In linear systems, the resonance has no effect upon the source. In non-linear systems, the resonance can either enhance or interfere with the glottis function.
h) don't care
i) How are blah blah blah different? THEY ARE NOT!!
j) don't know how to figure that out...
