Caitlin Craig McCoy Chapter 3

What are the two fundamental types of resonance that occur in the human body? Forced and free resonance.  Forced resonance requires a direct mechanical connection of the vibrator and the resonator.  Free resonance is the vibration of air molecules and reflections of sound waves within a space.

Why are the chest and head not good resonators for the projection of sound? Because the skin, muscle, fat, and other tissues covered by these areas dampen vibration.

What are the four traits common to all musical instruments, including the voice? A power source, vibrator, resonator, and articulator.

Why is the vocal tract considered to be a quarter-wave resonator? Because it is a closed/open tube.  Quarter-wavelength frequencies equal to the length of the vocal tract are the first to be resonated.

What is the relationship between the harmonic series and the resonance series of a quarter-wave system? The harmonic series consists of whole number multiples of the fundamental frequency.  The resonance series of the quarter-wave system consists of only odd number multiples of the first resonant frequency.

Define musical resonance. The amplification and enhancement of a musical tone by supplementary vibration.

What anatomical structures function as free resonators in the human voice? The trachea, the laryngopharynx, the oropharynx, the oral cavity, and the nasopharynx
