Savannah lesson plan 1/9-
I've been teaching Savannah for a couple of months now. She is 15 years old and really likes to sing. She is very attentive to how singing feels and is pretty good at giving feedback about different things we try while singing. Her voice is airy and relaxed in the lower range and as soon as we get into the passagio she freaks out and then seeks to regain control usually by tension in the root of the tongue. Since there are a lot of things to work on and I don't want to overwhelm her I decided to make my short term goals for her fairly simple. During lesson I want to emphasize both body alignment and awareness of proper body involvement in singing. I think this will help her become more aware of her body so she will stand a little straighter and hopefully become more aware of the breath and engaging the abdominal muscles when she sings. One of my long term goals for Savannah is getting her to have more speech in her voice since it has a very airy quality to it. Things I plan to do to achieve these goals is to have her be active while she sings either with a hula hooping motion in the hips or planking on the ground for a short amount of time. I want to address proper posture while singing again (since we've done it before) and do descending vocalizes that include low breaths (like breathing through a straw) so she will hopefully become more aware of her entire body rather than just her pharynx. I also will do yawns and sighs and possibly some sirens to hopefully establish that body connection as well.
